9mm Makarov
The 9mm Makarov (9X18mm) was developed in the Soviet Union and fielded in the late 1940s in the Makarov pistol as a replacement for the 7.62X25mm Tokarev. The 9mm Makarov is ballistically similar to the 380 ACP, with a .7126-inch case and a 93-grain bullet of an unusual .365-inch diameter at 1115 fps. Although the stopping power of the 9mm Makarov was long considered inadequate for military purposes it remained in service until 2005, when Russia finally replaced it with 9X19mm. With production of innumerable pistols 9mm Makarov ammunition is readily available and is loaded by most manufacturers both in the U.S. and Europe. — Craig Boddington
